Improving POS Security

18 February 2013

POS security should be a prime concern for retail businesses. While there are obvious concerns such as cash being stolen from the drawer, there are a number of other aspects that need to be considered.

  • Check your EFTPOS terminal regularly for signs of tampering. Criminals are becoming increasingly sophisticated at acquiring people’s banking details. Report any tampering immediately.

  • Keep register rolls in a safe place—people who acquire such details may be able to fraudulently produce store receipts.

  • Make sure that your company uses some sort of security mechanism for credit card transactions—e.g. driver’s license must be shown for purchases above a certain amount. Additionally, make sure that your business is conforming to PCI DSS standards

New technologies have greatly increased the level of security for POS systems, but it is also of key importance to remain vigilant—POS security is vital to your company’s finances and reputation.
